Oil portraits
Cao Yongping, a self-taught artist from Dalian, Liaoning province, is holding his solo show at the Magazine Art Gallery in Beijing.
On view are about 30 of his bright-colored oil portraits of late Chinese leader Mao Zedong.
Trained in paper-cut, prints, and photography, the 52-year-old has expressed his admiration for Mao since 2007 by portraying him in different historical periods.

Calligraphy
Wang Mingming, a veteran ink artist from Beijing, is staging a solo show at the Beijing Fine Art Academy.
On display are over 70 calligraphy works about classic literature Wang has created in recent years.
Their formats are varied, ranging from tiaofu (hanging scrolls), shoujuan (hand scrolls), ceye (brochures), duilian (couplets), to shanmian (fan covers), zhongtang (centerpieces), and bian'e (huge inscriptions).

Fine art fair
Art aficionados will have a great time at the 2010 Art Beijing - Fine Art Fair this weekend.
Running until Sept 19, the event encompasses over 2,000 ink, oils, prints, bronze wares, jewelry, and classic furniture pieces from China and other parts of the world.
The event will include forums on art collecting and charity sales for school dropouts and earthquake victims.

China Philharmonic Orchestra
Cellist Wang Jian will lead the China Philharmonic Orchestra in a program that includes Haydn's Cello Concerto in D Major and Tchaikovsky's Manfred Symphony Op 58. Yu Long, music director of the orchestra will conduct.

Ink paintings
Eighty contemporary ink paintings are on display at the National Center for the Performing Arts. The exhibits are predominantly Chinese traditional ink paintings by four artists: Tian Liming, Jiang Hongwei, Chen Ping and Zhang Jian.

Shanghai
A new concert hall
A new concert hall will open in suburban Zhujiajiao, thanks to Tan Dun, the Oscar-award winning composer and cultural ambassador of the Expo 2010 Shanghai.
Combining the German Bauhaus concept with China's Ming Dynasty style, Tan has managed to turn an antique building into a concert hall. The opening concert promises to be a visual and audio extravaganza.

Impressing the Czar
One of the highlights of this year's Shanghai International Art Festival is the Asian premiere of Impressing the Czar, a ballet in three acts by the Royal Ballet of Flanders. The choreographer of the show, William Forsythe, won the Oliver Twist Award for dance with this project.

Group exhibition
The Zendai Contemporary Art Exhibition Hall is holding its inauguration, featuring a group exhibition of multidisciplinary artists from China, including visual artists Cang Xin, Chen Tong and Du Zhenjun, and musician Zuoxiao Zuzhou.

Beyond the Border
The exhibition marks the first cooperative venture between the Zeit-Foto Salon and the Tangram Art Center. The show, Beyond the Border, has brought together more than 10 Japanese and seven Chinese artists for a dialogue on contemporary society and its problems.
