NY Peking Opera concert

The Forbidden City Concert Hall will host a Peking Opera concert to usher in the New Year.

Taking the stage will be accomplished performers from the China National Peking Opera Company, the National Academy of Chinese Theater Arts and other institutes, including Li Guang, Wang Rongrong and Li Hongmei.

They will present classic pieces from such operas as The Drunken Beauty, Mu Guiying Takes Command and The Lucky Purse.

Movie music

American Philharmonic Sonoma County will bring a spectacular concert to Beijing fans in the New Year.

Conducted by Gabriel Sakakeeny, the orchestra will not only perform world-famous classics such as the Flight of the Bumble Bee, but also play theme songs from Hollywood movies such as Avatar, Pirates of the Caribbean and Harry Potter.

The concert will include Chinese elements such as the theme song of Butterfly Lovers and that of several others.

Lens on dancer

A photography show featuring images of renowned dancer Yang Liping presents more than 80 black-and-white photos. They have been created by portrait photographer Xiao Quan, who has been following the Bai ethnic artist's dancing career since 1991.

Poetic depictions

Veteran ink painter Su Zongsheng from Shandong province, is holding his first solo exhibition in Beijing. On view are more than 70 of his flowers-and-birds paintings created in recent years. Su is noted for his vivid and poetic depiction of lotus flowers and Chinese wisteria.

Oils and installations

Ling Jian's solo show includes more than 50 of his latest oils and installations, inspired by Song Dynasty (960-1279) poetry.

Ling says he paints on mirror surfaces, and then puts them in round frames, "to give the viewer a funky, mysterious visual experience."

Shanghai

Detective drama

The Hollow, a piece of detective fiction by Agatha Christie, will be staged in Chinese. It was in this countryside murder mystery that Christie introduced the much-loved Belgian detective Hercule Poirot. The Chinese production will feature acclaimed actors such as Song Yining and Xu Chengxian. The director, Lin Yi, pays special attention to capturing the unique character of English country life.

Dinosaurs on stage

Theatrical extravaganza Walking With Dinosaurs will present life-size dinosaurs stomping and roaring. With dinosaurs - from hand-puppet ones to those as tall as three-story buildings - being the main stars of the show, an actor will play paleontologist and lead audiences on an educational trip through the history of planet Earth.

Four-person show

The exhibition Other Rooms, features four works of four artists/groups - Martin Creed, Peter Fischli and David Weiss, Adrian Piper and Dora Garcia - displayed in four different rooms. The works in different media will show a world of confusion and fantasy distorting reality.
