1930s China through American eyes

Entrance to Canton University

This is the entrance to Canton University which has been enlarged and made quite modern in the past few years. The old university consisted of a main building and rows of sheds containing about 12,000 cells, in which the triennial examinations were held. The return of Chinese students from foreign universities helped greatly to undermine the ancient regime, and in 1905 the entire system was abolished. Degrees are now purely academic, and carry no governmental preferment. English is among the studies taught and the head of that department in Canton University is a Filipino who is very proud of the modern methods being employed.
