People can help reduce pollution
Comment on "Tougher plan to reduce air pollution" (China Daily, July 25)
According to the report, the authorities have drawn up a five-year plan (2013-17) to reduce air pollution levels in Beijing, Tianjin, and Hebei province. Although it's good to see an organized plan to reduce pollution levels, we must remember that as individuals it is ultimately our responsibility to solve the pollution problem in Beijing and its surrounding regions.
People always expect the authorities to take measures to reduce air pollution, but controlling the problem also rests with individuals. To reduce air pollution, we have to cut down the consumption of coal in the capital and its neighborhood. Individuals can help do this by scaling down their daily consumption of electricity. This can be done through simple steps, such as using the stairs wherever possible instead of elevators, and turning off the lights and air-conditioners when not needed.
