Qigong 'master' faces 7 allegations

Wang Lin, a self-proclaimed master of qigong who has fled to Hong Kong, is being investigated by police for practicing unlicensed medical services, bigamy, tax evasion, cheating, gambling, offering bribes and illegally possessing guns, Guangzhou Daily reported on Wednesday. Wang, who claims to have supernatural powers, sparked controversy last month after photos of him and many celebrities appeared on the Internet.

Beijing

Poor graduates to get subsidies

College graduates from poor families in Beijing could get annual subsidies of 1,000 yuan ($163) each this year, the Beijing Bureau of Human Resources and Social Security said on Tuesday. The bureau called on college graduates to actively seek jobs even though it's reportedly the most difficult employment season this year, the Beijing News reported. The number of college graduates hit a historic high of 6.99 million this year.

Guizhou

Millions short of water in drought

Severe drought since mid-June has left nearly 2.46 million people in Guizhou province facing temporary water shortages, according to provincial authorities. Since last month, the drought has caused direct losses of 7.5 billion yuan ($1.23 billion) and affected lives of about 15 million people, the report added. The provincial civil affairs bureau has launched a disaster relief fund of 95 million yuan since the drought started.

Shaanxi

Woman accused of killing ex-friend

A woman has been detained by police in Xi'an, Shaanxi province, for allegedly killing her former friend and mutilating the body on Aug 1. The woman, surnamed Guo, 48, is alleged to have killed a man who borrowed 2.5 million yuan ($408,400) from her between 2007 and 2012 to invest in a gold mine. He refused to return the money.

Hubei

Police officer killed with poison dart

An assistant traffic police officer in Yunmeng county, Hubei province, was shot and killed by a poisoned dart on July 29, the county police said on Tuesday. The officer, surnamed Zhou, 28, was teaching his girlfriend to drive when he was shot. Zhou was taken to a hospital and died shortly after. An investigation identified a man of about 20 years old as a suspect, and police offered a 30,000 yuan ($4,900) reward for information.

Jiangsu

Needles removed from baby girl

Four sewing needles found in the waist and hips of an 11-month-old baby girl have been removed after surgery in Huai'an, Jiangsu province, media reports said on Wednesday. The needles were about 2 cm long and X-rays showed two had worked their way near the liver, Chen Weibing, a doctor at Huai'an Maternal and Child Health Care Hospital, told the Yangtze Evening News.

Zhejiang

Migrant held for girl's abduction

A migrant worker in Zhejiang province has been arrested for allegedly abducting an 18-year-old girl and chaining her in a cellar where she was repeatedly raped, the Qianjiang Evening News reported on Tuesday. Chen Xiaolong, 36, from Xinyang in Henan province, dug the cellar in a house he rented and picked up a girl, surnamed Guo from Anhui province, in front of a karaoke club in June and later abducted her, the report said. After 11 days, the girl broke the chains and cried for help. Neighbors saw her and called police.

Sichuan

Man suspected of underage sex

A businessman has been arrested in Panzhihua, Sichuan province, on suspicion of having sex with schoolgirls. Many of the girls, aged between 13 and 15, were found by police to have wanted to exchange sex for money, although their families are not poor. After her father confiscated her mobile phone, a girl who once had sex with the man called him, asking to exchange sex for 500 yuan ($82) to buy a new phone.

Hunan

Mine conceals explosion deaths

A coal mine company concealed the death toll in a coal and gas explosion in Hunan province in July, an investigation report by the provincial work safety authority said. The explosion occurred on July 24 at Gongsheng Coal Mine in Xinhua county. The coal mine owner only reported two fatalities, while the death toll was eight.
