Real name required for cellphone users

Real-name registration is now required for new mobile phone users, according to a new regulation from the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology starting from Sunday. The regulation, which was passed by the ministry in June, states telecommunication operators must require real-name registration when it offers service to new users. The registration also applies to unregistered existing users who change their telecommunication plans.

Hotlines to improve capital's taxi service

The hotline number for phone bookings and filing complaints will be posted on taxis in the capital starting from Sunday in a move to further improve quality of service, Beijing Commission of Transport said in a news statement. The transport authority integrated several phone booking platforms as part of a string of measures earlier this year to ease the taxi shortage. The hotline for phone bookings is 96106 and the hotline for customer complaints is 96123.

New regulations come into force

A series of new regulations and judicial interpretations, including new visa rules affecting foreigners in China, took effect on Sunday. According to the Regulation on Control of the Entry and Exit of Foreign Nationals, visa types for foreign nationals entering China will increase from the current eight to 12 types. Additional visa types can indicate more precisely a foreign national's reasons for entering China.

Yunnan

1 dead, 8 trapped in mining accident

One miner was killed and another eight trapped after a blast in a coal mine in Qujing early on Sunday, local authorities said. The accident happened around 4 am when 12 miners were tunneling a mine shaft at the Bailongshan Coal Mine. Three workers were lifted out of the shaft, said a spokesman with the city's emergency response office.

Signatures sought to support victims

People in Chengdu hope to collect signatures from 10,000 locals to show support for victims of Japan's air raids who are seeking compensation for Japanese wartime atrocities during the War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression (1937-45). From 1938 to 1944, the Japanese army sent 921 planes on indiscriminate bombing raids, resulting in heavy casualties in many parts of Sichuan, chinanews.com reported.

Sparrow driven out of plane cabin

A sparrow that flew into an airliner cabin was driven out by sound wave equipment on Saturday at the Shanghai Hongqiao International Airport, Shanghai Morning Post reported on Sunday. The sparrow was discovered flying in the cabin right before the international flight prepared to take off at 9 am. Passengers had to return to the terminal and airport staff could not catch the bird, which flew into the ceiling of the cabin.

City finally openslongest metro line

Shanghai's longest new metro line was launched on Saturday, with a total length of 65 kilometers, connecting northern Jiading district to Pudong New Area. Metro Line 11 surpassed Line 2 and became the longest line in Shanghai, and is the sixth line to straddle the Huangpu River. So far, the metro network in Shanghai stretches about 462 km with 300 stations.

DNA shock forchild-abusing father

A DNA test provoked deep remorse in a man who pushed four sewing needles into the body of his 2-month-old child, Modern Evening Times reported. The man surnamed Yin, from Beian, said he suspected the child was not his because he was diagnosed as infertile after he married. DNA testing proved Yin is the child's father. The needles were removed on Aug 23. Yin surrendered himself to police on Aug 25.

Blinded childgets donations

Cash left in locker returned to owners

A woman got back a bag containing 380,000 yuan ($62,128) after she left it in a supermarket locker in Haimen, Yangtze Evening Post reported on Sunday. The woman, from Shanghai, and her mother intended to start a car wash service in Haimen. They carried the money from Shanghai to Haimen and left it in a supermarket locker on Wednesday to save the cost of renting a bank safe. The bag was discovered by an employee cleaning the lockers, who gave it to police.

ROK volunteers clean mountains

An environmental protection team of 200 volunteers from South Korea collected garbage in the Qinling Mountains on Saturday, Xi'an Evening News reported. The activity was organized by the Consulate General of the Republic of Korea in Xi'an and the South Korea Chamber of Commerce in Xi'an.
