Eight detained in illegal hukou case

Eight people were detained by police on suspicion of illegally selling Beijing hukou, or residence permits. Beijing police said a man surnamed Wang had helped two graduates obtain Beijing hukou in July and August and charged them 980,000 yuan ($160,524), Beijing News reported on Tuesday. Police said the two hukou were from JJL Overseas Education Co, which had obtained them legally from the government earlier this year.

Rubber duck stays one day longer

Visitors to the Summer Palace have been given one more day to see the giant rubber duck, the work of Dutch artist Florentijn Hofman. The duck's appearance was due to end on Oct 26 but organizers have postponed it to Oct 27 because the duck had to be deflated on Thursday last week when strong winds swept through Beijing.

Boy, 2, left onschool bus dies

A 2-year-old boy who was left unattended on a school bus in Qichun county for more than half a day died on Monday, local authorities said on Tuesday. Police have detained two suspects, named Wang and Hu, for negligence and causing the death of the boy. Wang was the school bus driver for Xiwangzhixing Kindergarten in Shizi township, and Hu was in charge of taking care of all the children on the bus.

Police officer uses fake license plate

A traffic police chief in Luonan county has been detained for 15 days and fined because he used a fake license plate, China Daily learned on Tuesday. Wang Hongwei, chief of the Shimen detachment of the county's traffic police, used a license plate that displayed numbers issued to another car. He was discovered on Saturday by the owner of the license plate, surnamed Chen. Chen reported the case to local police. On Monday, the police bureau decided to detain Wang for 15 days, fine him 5,000 yuan ($820) and put 12 penalty points on his driving license.

Zhejiang

New bird flucase detected

Another person in Zhejiang province has been found infected with H7N9 bird flu. The priovincial health bureau said on its website on Tuesday that a 35-year-old man was diagnosed with the bird flu virus. The patient, surnamed Liu, is a white-collar worker in Shaoxing who sought medical treatment on Oct 8. He is in critical condition. It was the second case reported in Zhejiang since late April, the bureau said.

Guizhou

Bid to save 7 trapped miners

Rescuers are rushing to save seven miners who have been trapped for four days in a flooded coal mine in Huishui county. By 11 am on Tuesday, 39,290 cubic meters of water had been pumped out of the flooded shaft at the Dachong Coal Mine, according to the disaster relief and rescue headquarters. The accident occurred at about 1:30 pm on Friday.

Singles invited to matchmaking party

Single residents under the age of 60 will be welcome at a matchmaking party in Qingpu district from Nov 9-11. It is the first time that the annual matchmaking party has accepted guests between the ages of 35 and 60, said Yang Ying, a spokeswoman for the party.

Bomb hoaxcaller arrested

A man in Qimen county was arrested after he made a bomb hoax call to police. The man, surnamed Jiang, 26, said he had planted bombs in banks, anhuinews.com reported on Tuesday. Jiang owed his uncle 100,000 yuan ($16,380) and wanted the banks to close so he could delay honoring the debt. Jiang called police on Aug 28 saying he had put bombs in several banks. He demanded 1 million yuan, or he would detonate the bombs. Police traced the call and apprehended Jiang.

Official imprisoned for taking bribes

A former official in Huangshan was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment for bribery, Xinhua News Agency reported on Tuesday. Wang Jianshe, a former member of the standing committee of the Communist Party of China's Huangshan city committee, was found to have accepted bribes of more than 5 million yuan ($819,000) from 56 people from 1987 to 2012.

Sichuan

Newlyweds go missing on trip

A recently married couple from Chengdu has been reported missing for nine days after going on a road trip to Shangri-la county in neighboring Yunnan province. They began their trip on Oct 1 and have not been heard from since Oct 6. Yunnan police suspected the couple had disappeared near a snow-capped mountain in the Shangri-la area. The search is continuing.
