The matchmaker guided the 20 couples to do the "three bows" — to heaven and nature, to friends and relatives and to each other. This signifies the end of the wedding ceremony.

Local couple Zhang Hounong and Wu Yujuan, both 82, watched the ceremonies. They tied the knot 58 years ago, meaning they will celebrate their "diamond wedding", anniversary in two years time.

"The day we registered for marriage was Feb 14 and it's a lucky coincidence. People didn't know about foreign festivals back then," says Zhang.

"We had nothing but quilts and thermos bottles when we got married. We were apart for 10 years during the 'cultural revolution' (1966-76) and my wife took care of our three children alone while waiting for me," says Zhang, who now has three grandchildren.

He says life in those days wasn't romantic or colorful, and supporting one another is the most precious thing in a relationship.

"The Chinese concept of happiness is a couple can be still intimate in their twilight years with filial offspring. I wish the newlyweds today a lifetime of perfect happiness," he says.
