SOCHI -- Chinese athletes has achieved good results at the Sochi Winter Olympic Games, China's deputy chef de mission Xiao Tian said here on Saturday.
Xiao made the remarks in the Chinese delegation briefing one day before the Winter Olympic Games close.
"We won three gold, four silver and two bronze so far in the Games," said Xiao. "Despite two less gold medals than last time in Vancouver, it is a still satifying performance."
China currently ranked 11th in the medal standings. It won five gold, two silver and four bronze in the 2010 Vancouver Games and was seventh on the medal table.
"It was a difficult Olympics for China," said Xiao. "There were 12 new events included in the Games which we had no advantage. Our gold favorite Wang Meng was injured before the Olympics. But we are still the best in Asia."
Zhang Hong claimed the first ever Olympic speed skating gold for China.
"It's a historical moment when Zhang ended China's Olympic gold drought in speed skating, a blue-ribbon event in winter sports," said Xiao. "It is the heaviest gold medal for the country and we have been waiting for this for 22 years."
"We also missed some good chances in the competition, and we will try to improve," he added.
Xiao spoke highly of Sochi's organization of the Olympics, saying it was beyond expectations and could give China a lot of inspiration in bidding for the 2022 Winter Olympic Games.
