According to ancient Chinese mythology, a monster comes every New Year's Eve to hurt people. People light fireworks to scare it away.

In a village in Huizhou during the Qing Dynasty, a boy was playing outside and forgot to go home before 12 o'clock. That was when he came across the monster, Nian. The monster was eventually driven away, but the boy became friends with Nian's son. Soon the boy realized Nian came to watch the fireworks with its children.
