The 5,000 square meters store will feature a retail space and a Disney-themed outdoor plaza area. It is expected to enhance Disney's brand among tourists and boost sales at other licensed stores and related products.
Cheung said he is confident the store's sales and products sold there won't be offered at other distribution channels.
There is no plan to open a second store although expansion to other cities in China hasn't been ruled out, he said.
Cheung said collaboration with local partners to create original stories reflecting Chinese culture and values will foster growth of local creative talent and develop the cultural industry.
To encourage local content, the Walt Disney Studios and Shanghai Media Group Pictures launched a partnership co-developing Disney-branded movies for a global audience.
The US-based writers will team up with locally based Chinese writers and filmmakers to develop stories and scripts featuring authentic Chinese elements for the local and international markets.
