Tourists from Chinese mainland are spending more in Taiwan than any other group, reported local paper Economic Daily News on Sunday.

Japanese tourists were used to top the list for highest average expenditure per person daily when traveling in Taiwan.

It is the first time that Chinese mainland tourists have taken the top spot since Taiwan opened up its tourism to visitors from Chinese mainland in 2008.

According to Taiwan's tourism sector, every traveler from Chinese mainland on average spent $232.15 per day, higher than the average expenditure of $221.45 Japanese spent in the first three quarters of 2015.

Also, every Chinese mainland tourist on average spent $122.78 on shopping, or $40.06 more than that spent by Japanese tourist.

Japanese tourists have cut down on overseas spending as yen devaluated sharply and domestic consumption tax rose.

The daily expense of Japanese and Chinese mainland tourist in 2014 was $243.33 and $241.98 respectively.
