"We have six people in our family now helping run the restaurant and diners spend on average 30 yuan each" said Wang. "My wife and I now can earn 10,000 yuan or so monthly, about the same as I earned when I worked in big cities."

Huamao is now home to 42 farmhouse hostels and 10 farmhouse restaurants and 97.62 percent of its villagers have started living comfortable lives with average annual disposable income reaching 10,948 yuan ($1,663) in 2014.

"With competition I want our farmhouse restaurants to become better and better," said Wang. "I want to see more restaurants in my village. The more the better."
