The Other Gallery (Shanghai Space) is presenting a private collection show - From the Ashes - of performance artist Zhang Huan, best known for his works from the 1990s and his most recent sculptures and installations.

Zhang worked in New York from 1998 to 2005, where he cooperated with renowned art museums and galleries to perform and display his photography works. His career peaked after returning to China in 2005.

Zhang pays a lot of attention to ancestry and the memory of human beings. And he never hesitates to express the subject of pain.

In this exhibition, the audience will find Zhang's most significant works in 2006 and 2007, including woodcut prints, incense ash paintings, and leather and bronze sculptures.

The show also features Zhang's earlier incense ash works and a leather Buddha head, which set a promising foundation for his later creations.

Until Nov 4. Other Gallery (Shanghai Space), 101, Building 9, 50 Moganshan Road, Putuo district, Shanghai. 021-3383-6378.
