Tiexi district, Shenyang

This area was originally planned as an industrial zone by the Japanese in 1938, during their occupation of Northeast China.

After 1949, Shenyang's heavy industry became a pillar of the country's tattered economy.

Tiexi district, where enterprises clustered, embraced its first golden period of rapid growth. However, like many domestic industrial bases, it went through tremendous difficulties as China shifted to a market economy in the 1990s.

In 2002, the Shenyang government merged Tiexi district into another administrative unit called "Tiexi new district". With all of its heavy industry companies being relocated, Tiexi now has become a hub of hi-tech enterprises.
