The 'Roar' singer added 15 million users to her total of over 48.5 million in the last 12 months, according to statistics released by the social networking website.
Justin Bieber wasn't far behind Katy gaining 13.8 million extra online friends this year, bring his grand total to more than 47.8 million followers.
Other notable statistics released by Twitter reveal Kanye West's 'Yeezus' was the most tweeted about album, being mentioned in 4.4 million posts, while Miley Cyrus' 'Bangerz' inspired 1,590,351 tweets.
Other celebrities to celebrate a Twitter triumph include One Direction who dominated four out of the top five re-tweets, while 36-year-old Kanye's daughter North - his child with fiancée Kim Kardashian - became a hot topic of conversation throughout 2013 as the six-month-old tot has become one of the most popular hashtags.
The controversy surrounding Miley Cyrus' video for 'Wrecking Ball' - in which she sits on the demolition tool whilst naked - seemingly increased her popularity on Twitter as the song became the most talked about single of the year with 8.1 million mentions.
Meanwhile, the 'We Can't Stop' singer's performance at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards - in which she wore a latex bikini and twerked against Robin Thicke during their rendition of 'Blurred Lines' - prompted 18.5 million tweets compared to the 15.7 million posts generated by the Grammy Awards.
