A 27-year-old father was sentenced to five years in prison for selling his illegitimate son for 80,000 yuan ($13,000) to a woman surnamed Wang, Beijing Youth Daily reported on Tuesday. The father put notices online to sell the baby at prices ranging from 50,000 yuan to 80,000 yuan. He picked Wang from more than 100 potential buyers because she offered the highest price.

11 professions make finding spouse difficult

As Nov 11, Singles' Day, is approaching, a list of the top 11 professions that make it the most difficult for practitioners to find a spouse was released, Guangming Daily reported on Tuesday. The top three on the list are writers, migrant workers and singers. Other professions on the list include courier, host/hostess, salesman, lawyer, chef, reporter, athlete and airline stewardess.

Domestic generic Viagra 'priced too high'

The domestic version of Viagra, a medicine for erectile dysfunction, which has been arguably expensive, is on the market, according to China News Service. Although each pill costs 48 yuan ($7.90), 60 percent less than the imported drug, Yu Mingbo, an andrologist at the General Hospital of People's Liberation Army, said the price is too high because Chinese Viagra uses a foreign formula and required little domestic research. Yu said a price of 20 yuan per pill would be reasonable.

Northern China likely to be shrouded by smog

Light haze is expected to shroud parts of northern China, with rain hitting the country's southwest over the next three days, the National Meteorological Center said on Tuesday. The central and southern parts of northern China will see light to moderate smog in some areas, as unfavorable weather conditions spread on Tuesday and Wednesday morning. A cold front on Wednesday is expected to clear the smog, the center said.

Singles' Day to deliver 500 million parcels

More than 500 million parcels are expected to be delivered during the sales promotion to celebrate Singles' Day on Nov 11, an official said on Tuesday. Liu Jun, deputy director of the State Post Bureau, said the amount of deliveries during this year's Singles' Day shopping spree will rise nearly 50 percent year-on-year. "The peak is expected to come one or two days after Nov 11 and more than 90 million parcels will be delivered on a single day, up about 40 percent from the same period last year," said Liu.

1.8 million sign petition against Occupy protests

The anti-Occupy group Alliance for Peace and Democracy has collected more than 1.83 million signatures from Hong Kong citizens opposing the protests, according to the group. Representatives of the group submitted the unprecedented 1.83 million-signature petition against the Occupy movement to Hong Kong's Chief Secretary Carrie Lam at the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region government's headquarters in Tamar on Monday night. Lam said the SAR government will not let the Occupy Central movement drag on, and will examine the situation and take action to resolve the problem at the right time.

Family from same village accused of killing girl, 17

A family of three stands accused of killing a 17-year-old girl who came from the same village in Yuexi, Sichuan province, China News Service reported on Tuesday. The family and the girl came to Luxi county to engage in prostitution at the beginning of the year. The girl said she wanted to return home and quit working as a prostitute. The family decided to kill her for fear she would reveal their business and disgrace them in front of fellow villagers. According to the report, the father strangled the girl at a family barbecue.

Six die, 43 injuredin tour bus accident

A tour bus carrying 49 people overturned on Monday morning, killing six and injuring 43 others, local authorities said. The vehicle rolled over at around 10 am at an intersection on the island of Yangshan, the Shanghai municipal government said in a statement. The passengers on the 55-seat bus were heading toward Shengsi county, a cluster of islands administered by neighboring Zhejiang province, it said.

Woman takes in ex sent packing by mistress

A woman surnamed Zhang in Ningbo took in her ex-husband, who had been kicked out by his mistress. The man, who had divorced Zhang, had been driven away by his mistress of 10 years because his business had failed and he had diabetes and suffered a heart attack. For old time's sake, Zhang forgave her ex-husband, Qianjiang Evening News reported.

Uygur feeds students with nang he makes

Turson Dawut, a 53-year-old Uygur, has been donating nang, a traditional Uygur crusty pancake, to more than 100 poor students in a local primary school and a middle school in Aksu for five years, Guangming Daily reported on Tuesday. Turson, who runs a nang shop, started giving the students food in September 2009 after learning some did not have enough to eat at lunch. He also bought jackets and boots for the children every winter and sent them gifts on Children's Day.

Suspect held as fatal child stabbings probed

Police arrested a key suspect in a stabbing case in which two schoolchildren were killed and another seriously injured last week. Officers detained Zhang Yangxi in Banqiao, a village in Guixi, at about 5:40 pm on Tuesday after receiving a tip. Zhang allegedly attacked the three children as they walked home from school in the neighboring village of Luojia on Friday morning. An 8-year-old boy died at the scene and another child died in a hospital. The remaining youngster, a 6-year-old boy, has come out of a coma but remains under intensive care, according to sources at Shangrao People's Hospital. Police had offered a reward of 50,000 yuan ($8,180) for information leading to the killer's arrest.

Bride among four killed as limo hits barrier

A stretch-limousine hit the central barrier of a highway in Ganzhou on Monday, killing four of the 12 passengers, including a bride returning from her wedding photo shoot, local authorities said on Tuesday. The 15-seat vehicle was returning the wedding group from a photo shoot in Meizhou, Guangdong province, when it hit the barrier on a section of the Ruigan Highway at around midnight, according to local police. Four passengers were pronounced dead at the scene and six others were injured, including the groom.

Married couple fight over online shopping

A couple in Siping argued for several days because the woman was addicted to online shopping, a local evening paper reported on Tuesday. According to the husband, the family only earned a median income, but the woman spent half of their income shopping online. In late October, she ordered a lot of goods that shopping malls prepared for Nov 11, Singles' Day. The husband canceled her orders, but was caught by the wife.

Senior's scores astonish scholarship committee

An academic record astonished every committee member at a special scholarship review at Tsinghua University, anhuinews.com reported on Tuesday. Han Yanjun, a senior in the Department of Electrical Engineering, earned full scores in 15 courses, 99 points out of 100 in four and 98 in one course. Han, from Anhui province, was admitted by Tsinghua University as the top scorer in the province. During the past three years, besides three patents, he won a national scholarship and several competition prizes at home and abroad.

Tunnel collapses; 9 workers missing

Nine workers were buried when a tunnel that was under construction collapsed in Lanzhou, local sources said on Tuesday. The accident happened shortly after 3:30 pm, when about a dozen workers were in the Yangzhouping No 2 railway tunnel on the outskirts of Lanzhou. Rescuers were digging a shaft in an attempt to locate the missing workers. Three ambulances were standing by at the scene. The cause of the accident was under investigation.
