2 dead, several injured in Zambia after AFCON victory

LUSAKA - At least two people died and several others suffered injuries in Lusaka's celebration last night after the country's national soccer team reached the quarterfinals at the on-going Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

The Zambian capital erupted in wild celebrations immediately after the final whistle in which Zambia beat co-hosts Equatorial Guinea to top Group A on seven points on Sunday night.
University Teaching Hospital (UTH) Public Relations Manager Pauline Mbangweta said that two girls died due to the victory celebrations while 14 others were treated for various due to rod traffic accidents and 19 suffered injuries due to fights that ensured after the game.
"We had two brought-in-dead cases last night involving two girls. One was hit by a car as people were celebrating while the other one fell from a moving vehicle. We also had 14 road traffic victims while 19 people were injured in fights they erupted as people were celebrating," she said.
Skipper Christopher Katongo scored the all-important goal after 67 minutes of play to silence the vocal local fans at the Malabo stadium to earn the Chipolopolo (the Bullets) a deserved victory.
The win pushed the team to seven points while Equatorial Guinea finished on six points. Libya beat Senegal 2-1 in the other Group A game to finish on four points while pre-tournament favorites Senegal finished without a point.
Zambia national soccer coach Herve Renard said after the game that it should not be a surprise that his charges achieved their second successive quarterfinal target at the AFCON tournament after doing the same during the 2010 competition.
