BEIJING - Norway won the gold medal in the 2014 World men's Curling Championship with a overwhelming 8-3 win over Sweden on Sunday.
It is Norway's first world champion in recent nine attempts, while defending champion Sweden added a silver medal to their trophy cabinet with a bronze medal at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics.
"Happy and I haven't ever been exciting like this," said Pal Trulsen, head coach of the Norway team, "This has been a very long week. When the competition is over you feel kind of empty. It's a good result for Norway. The last time we won the world champion was in 1988."
Norway got off to a great start scoring a point in each of the first two ends and two points in the third. Another one point in the fourth end led Norway 5-0 going into the fifth.
Defending champion Sweden came back in the seventh end and earned two points, but it was not good enough to take down the dominant Norway team led by skip Thomas Ulsrud. Norway answered with two points in the eighth end and brought the match to the end.
"We got off to a good start and we were leading 5-1 at the half way point. At that point you don't get very spontaneous, it was a relief to finish strong," said Trulsen, "They (Sweden) didn't have their best day, they had to take chances and we just floated on the lead we had."
Earlier in the day, Switzerland beat Sochi Winter Olympic champion Canada 7-5 to claim the bronze medal of the Championship. This is the first time that Canada didn't get medal in the world championship in 13 years.
