Airbus has put its newest jet, the A350, on its maiden flight Friday, setting up a fierce competition with its US rival Boeing that dominates the long haul market.
The jet is designed to economise on fuel with its light-weight carbon-fiber body. It took off from the company's plant in Toulouse, with six crew members and test equipment.
Analysts say the flight marks a milestone for Airbus as it rivals against Boeing's 787 Dreamliner in long-haul routes.
