The urban-rural construction commission of Guangzhou announced on Friday that the plan to build a tunnel through White Cloud Mountain in the city has been suspended because experts, legislators, political advisers and people near the site were divided on it at a recent seminar.
The plan is not yet complete and the conditions for building the tunnel are not in place, the commission said in a statement.
In mid-November, it was revealed that the government was soliciting opinions on the building a tunnel through White Cloud Mountain to speed up traffic and improve the development of the area.
Since late November, many experts and parties, especially the Guangdong University of Foreign Studies, located at the foot of the mountain, have opposed the project, questioning the environmental, geological and cultural impact.
Some have also questioned the legitimacy of the planning of the project.
