The quake was strongly felt in Yunnan's Qiaojia County. It toppled and damaged some houses, according to the county government.
"Many people ran out of buildings when the quake came but there were no falling objects. The shopping mall resumed business shortly afterwards," a shopper told Xinhua.
The epicenter, with a depth of 6 km, was monitored at 27.1 degrees north latitude and 103.0 degrees east longitude, according to the China Earthquake Networks Center.
