BEIJING - Xi Jinping was elected chairman of the Central Military Commission of the People's Republic of China at the annual session of the 12th National People's Congress Thursday morning.

Xi was also elected Chinese president at the same meeting.

The election result was announced after a vote of deputies to the national legislature.

Xi Jinping used very powerful and vivid language to show his resolve to fight corruption.

Xi Jinping conducted his first inspection tour as the new Party chief from Dec 7 to 11 in Guangdong province.

Xi has called for efforts to ensure judicial and procuratorial organs exercise the judicial and procuratorial authority independently, fairly and in accordance with the law.

China will adhere to an "open, cooperative and win-win" development model.

Poverty alleviation

The central authorities attach high importance to poverty alleviation and to the development of areas inhabited by ethnic minorities.

Xi urged boosting innovation-powered development in order to make China an economic heavyweight.
