A group of 11 people who were trying to travel to Ghana to work with fake visas were caught in Shenzhen on Monday, Shekou immigration officials said on Thursday.

The group attracted the attention of immigration officials at the Shekou checkpoint due to their unusual anxiety and significant amount of luggage. They were trying to cross the border through different channels at noon on March 11.

An initial investigation by the immigration officials found that the group, from Guangdong province and the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, held legal visas to travel to Cambodia. However, one of them disclosed in further questioning that their final destination was Ghana in West Africa.

Eleven fake Ghana visas were found in the luggage of the group leader, according to Shekou checkpoint officials.

The leader then admitted that he was trying to take the low-paid workers to his newly developed gold mine in Ghana.

The 10 workers said that they have little knowledge about the life in Ghana but would like to make some money there.

Immigration officials reminded the workers that they must get legal visas to work abroad or their rights will not be guaranteed.
