Pet bird sales have been suspended in Beijing after H7N9 bird flu virus was detected from samples of pigeon in a Shanghai marketplace, according to local authorities in charge of animal epidemic prevention and treatment.
Pet stores have been asked to remove birds from their shelves temporarily. Details of punishments for those still found selling pet birds have yet to be released.
The Beijing Administration of Industry and Commerce also took steps to stop the trade of live poultry in Beijing markets.
A ban on poultry slaughter in these markets was also issued by the administration.
Residents can report live poultry trading and slaughter by calling 12315.
