A Briton and his Chinese partner are being investigated in Guangzhou, the Guandong provincial capital, to assess whether the man should be charged with bigamy, the New Express Daily reported on Tuesday.

The pair, a 48-year-old businessman, identified by police only as Jerry, and a local woman were investigated after the man's wife in Britain sought police help.

The newspaper report said the man has been married to his British wife for more than 20 years and they have four children in the UK, including twins. His wife resigned from her job as an accountant to look after their children.

The man said that after he arrived in Guangzhou to do business in September 2005, he fell in love with his Chinese business partner. They soon started living together in Guangzhou and she later gave birth to two children in Hong Kong.

The man's British wife traveled to Guangzhou in March 2012 and reported to police with help of a local lawyer. Police put the case on their files early this year.

The man and his Chinese partner were detained and later remanded on bail, separately.
