The Foreign Affairs Office of the People's Government of Beijing Municipality has set up an overseas consular protection agency, which is in charge of leading, coordinating and directing emergency management concerning foreign affairs from Beijing and protecting the safety of Chinese citizens and agencies in foreign countries.
Since 2011, Beijing has been working to improve overseas consular protection, making contingency plans for it. The capital has dealt with more than 100 cases of overseas consular protection events, including after the Congo (Brazzaville) explosion last year.
