The Graduate Student Union of Fudan University is calling for donations to help the parents of Huang Yang, the 28-year-old medical student who died of poisoning on Tuesday.
The union made the proposal on its Sina Weibo micro blog on Thursday.
Donation boxes will be put at the front door of four campus canteens from 11:30 am to 1 pm on April 18 and 19, or made directly to a university bank account.
"The sudden passing of Huang Yang made us feel worried about his parents. We promise that every penny from the donation will be given to the parents," said a statement for the union.
Huang came from a poor family in Sichuan province and is an only child. His father was laid off from a State-owned enterprise many years ago and his mother suffered from a chronic disease.
Huang died from multi-organ failure 15 days after he drank water laced with a toxic chemical. His roommate, surnamed Lin, is suspected of poisoning Huang with N-Nitrosodimethylamine, a highly toxic chemical that can damage the livers.
Donations can be remitted to Fudan University bank account number 033267-08017003441, which is with the Wujiaochang Branch of the Agriculture Bank of China.
