A major drug smuggler was apprehended at the frontier inspection station in Hangzhou, Zhejiang province, according to Youth Times, a local newspaper.
An African suspect was detained and heroin, weighing 409 grams, was seized, the paper said.
The case is the biggest of its kind at the Hangzhou checkpoint since 1979.
The suspect got off a plane from Ethiopia on July 9.
Airport duty officers checked his baggage and found a box. When asked to unwrap it, the suspect became nervous.
The box allegedly contained a bag of white powder, weighing 409 grams and tests confirmed it was 70-percent pure heroin.
