Driver denies murder claim
On Dec 25, 2010, Fei Liangyu was behind the wheel of a truck that crushed to death Qian Yunhui, a village head known for his numerous petitions against alleged abuses by the local government in Zhejiang province. Rumor had it that Qian was murdered by authorities, but Fei has denied it from the beginning. Fei was sentenced to a 3 1/2-year jail term in February 2011 and got an early release on June 24 this year. He insisted Qian's death was accidental, and he wanted to apologize to Qian's family in person.

More grants for postgraduates and PhD graduates
Starting this fall, full-time postgraduates will get student grants of no less than 6,000 yuan ($980) per year, and PhD students will get no less than 10,000 yuan, according to a notice from the Ministry of Finance.
