Three of 101 batches of mooncakes and one of 40 batches of mooncake filling were found to be substandard during a recent quality check in Guangdong province, with a failing rate of 2.84 percent.

Of the three substandard mooncake batches, two, made in Foshan and Heyuan, had excessive colony-forming units, according to the Administration of Quality and Technology Supervision of Guangdong.

One batch, made in Guangzhou, failed checks on inter-space ratio in packaging.

The substandard moon cake filling, made in Wuchuan, contained excessive coliform bacteria.

The administration has required quality watchdogs in the cities where the substandard products were made to keep closer watch on the related companies in their daily operation.
