China appoints senior officials

BEIJING - The State Council, China's cabinet, has reshuffled its senior government officials.

Tian Jing was named head of the National Administration for the Protection of State Secrets, replacing Meng Xiangfeng, according to a statement from the council on Friday.

The State Council relieved Cheng Jiazhu of his position as deputy commander of Xinjiang Production and Construction Corps and appointed Li Xinming and Yang Fulin as two deputy commanders. While Song Hao was named its deputy political commissar.

Wang Zhimin was named deputy head of Hong Kong and Macao Affairs Office of the State Council, replacing Xu Ze. Long Mingbiao replaces Ye Kedong as vice director of the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office.

The cabinet named Qiu Yong president of Tsinghua University; Wan Lijun president of the University of Science and Technology of China; Xu Huibin president of Beihang University; and Wu Zhaohui president of Zhejiang University.

According to the statement, Liu Jinguo, deputy secretary of the Communist Party of China's Central Commission for Discipline Inspection, will no longer serve as vice minister of the Ministry of Public Security.
