In the 1920s, Rivera returned to Mexico and began to become involved in the mural movement. The movement, originating during the Mexican Revolution in 1910, inspired artists there to create their own style instead of copying Europe's arts.

Mexican artists integrated colorful Indian arts, European artistic methods and patriotism together and created many large-sized murals in public, which formed a unique public art style.

Rivera's mural creations during this time attracted much attention and his works can be seen in many places now in Mexico. This painting is a masterpiece among his murals.
