As one of China's most active calligraphers, Xia Pengcheng doesn't confine himself to tradition.

He endeavors to modernize the ancient art form while simultaneously creating contemporary art.

His current solo exhibition in Beijing, Time and Speed, displays 30 of his calligraphic works and oil paintings, and a video and an installation made of tires.

Xia contends artists should sustain slow and steady creative processes to present truly quality works despite existing in a time of rapid mass production.

The show at Songzhuang art district's Fine Arts Equivalence gallery runs through May 30.
