Protection of employee inventions
Thirteen ministries including the State Intellectual Property Office have jointly released guidelines on protecting the rights of inventors who make discoveries or innovations while under employment contracts. The initiative says State-owned enterprises and the military should set up invention reporting and management systems to protect inventors and increase rewards.

Copyright registrations soar
The National Copyright Administration announced on Jan 17 that the total number of copyright registrations in China last year surpassed 800,000. More than 680,000 were copyrights on works of art, an increase of 49 percent over 2011. More than half of the registrations were made in Beijing. Copyrights filed for proprietary software reached nearly 140,000, an increase of 27 percent, with about 2,000 of the software designs related to cloud computing technologies.

2. Shandong
210 cases of fake wine seized
The industry and commerce administration of Laizhou recently seized 210 cases of fake-branded Chinese wine in a local wholesale store. Officials said that the products carried a counterfeited label and packaging for Yantai Guniang, a well-known local brand by Shandong Yantai Winery Co Ltd. The wine had a potential retail value of more than 20,000 yuan ($3,218), said officials.

IP focus in e-business disputes
A large proportion of all e-business legal disputes in China are over intellectual property rights, according to a report released last week in Hangzhou. The report followed a six-month survey by the independent China E-Commerce Research Center that analyzed 500 domestic companies. Other major disputes center around contracts and unfair competition, according to the report.

Counterfeit Moutai packaging
Security officers at Guiyang airport recently found two shipments of fake Moutai liquor packaging and trademarks, the larger of which was bound for Urumqi in Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region. It contained 4,000 sets of counterfeit packaging, 4,500 labels, 1,200 bottle caps and 800 bags. The other shipment seized had 500 faked labels bound for Shanghai, said enforcement officials. Both cases have been turned over to local police for further investigation.

Popular 'bracket' for train comfort
A "sleeping bracket" is a hot-selling item online as train travelers with tickets for hard seats prepare for Spring Festival. The patented product, priced at around 200 yuan, can ease pressure on the lumbar and cervical vertebrae caused by long hours of sitting during travel, said inventor Chen Jianquan, an overseas Chinese born in the province, who spent four years designing the device.
