A draft regulation that proposes upgrading security measures in kindergartens has been put out for public scrutiny on the website of the Legislative Affairs Office of the State Council. The draft working guideline for kindergartens, which is open for public opinion until April 23, includes a set of detailed rules on security measures that kindergartens have to take.

Scientists unlock wheat genetic code

Scientists from China and the United States have mapped a key genetic code for bread wheat, a discovery that will help improve the crop's productivity and ability to withstand extreme conditions. The sequencing and drafting of the A genome, one of the three basic genomes of wheat, was published on the website of the journal Nature on Monday.

Jiaolong sub starts missions in June

Manned submersible Jiaolong will start conducting scientific missions in June, its chief designer said on Monday. Xi Jinan, a researcher with the China Shipbuilding Industry Corp, said the sub will conduct research for five months in each of the next five years. This year, it will carry out scientific investigations into poly nodules at depths of 5,300 meters in the northeast Pacific Ocean.

Sailor set to finish solo world trip

Sailor Guo Chuan is expected to return to Qingdao and finish his solo non-stop sailing trip around the world on April 3, his support team said on Monday. Guo, 47, the first Chinese sailor to have taken part in the Clipper Round the World race (2006) and the first Chinese to complete the Volvo Ocean Race (2008-09), set off on his voyage around the world from Qingdao on Nov 18.

Train crash survivor returns home

Xiang Weiyi, the youngest survivor of the 2011 bullet train crash, has returned home to Wenzhou, Zhejiang province, after undergoing a year and a half of treatment in Shanghai for the injury to her left leg. The 3-year-old girl, nicknamed Yiyi, whose parents along with 38 other people were killed in the crash near Wenzhou in July 2011, will live with her uncle's family and begin kindergarten soon. Yiyi seems to have moved beyond the tragedy but will continue her physical therapy in Wenzhou.

Search ends for woman in manhole

A 21-year-old woman from Hunan province is still missing after she fell into an uncovered manhole during heavy rain on Friday night, People's Daily reported on Monday. The search for Yang Lijun in the Tianxin district of Changsha, the provincial capital, was called off on Sunday night and rescuers have left the scene, the report said. Yang, a university student in Beijing majoring in jewelry design, had returned home to see her parents.
