A 4-year-old boy confirmed with H7N9 bird flu on Thursday has recovered, a disease control and prevention official in Shanghai said on Monday.
"From a clinical point of view, the boy has recovered," said Wu Fan, director of the Shanghai Disease Control and Prevention Center.
The boy's recovery proves not every human infection of H7N9 is severe, Wu said. The boy will need to remain in the hospital for further observation, Wu added.
The boy's temperature is normal and he has no respiratory symptoms, said Yu Hui, director of the infectious disease department of the Children's Hospital affiliated with Fudan University, where the boy is being treated.
The hospital said the boy's condition is stable and he has no abnormal respiratory symptoms. It didn't say when the boy will be able to leave the hospital.
China has no standards for the discharge of H7N9-infected patients. For H1N1-infected patients, a full recovery period of seven days and two negative virus tests are required before the patient can leave hospital.
So far, the city's educational establishments, such as kindergartens, high schools and universities, have been required to tighten health checks on students and teachers.
Shanghai Municipal Education Commission also required schools to enhance hygiene management and report any abnormal cases immediately. Students or teachers who are absent or on sick leave should report to schools.
The city's live poultry has been disinfected, and no H7N9 bird flu virus was detected, it said on Monday.
Shanghai also announced its public hotline for residents to report those who raise pigeons, chickens or other live poultry.
Residents can call 12319, 12345 or 52901111 to make a complaint or ask for help.
