Former deputy governor tried
Huang Sheng, a former deputy governor of Shandong province, stood trial at the intermediate people's court in Nanjing, Jiangsu province, on Monday on charges of accepting bribes. According to the municipal people's procuratorate, he accepted bribes worth more than 12.23 million yuan ($1.97 million), prosecutors said. The court said the verdict will be announced at a later date.

Security guard kills driver, self
Police said that a security guard on board a bank vehicle shot and killed the driver of an armored vehicle on Monday and then committed suicide in Handan city, Hebei province. Local police said in its micro blog that the guard had "a dispute" with the driver, without elaborating. The case is being investigated.

Natural disasters claim 141 lives
Natural disasters across China claimed 141 lives and left another 83 people missing from January to March, the Ministry of Civil Affairs announced on Monday. Affecting a total of 52.76 million people, disasters forced the evacuation of 253,000 people and toppled some 34,000 houses, according to a statement released by the MCA.
