Attacker named after killing two

An attacker who stabbed two people to death and injured another in downtown Beijing on Saturday has been identified as Li Jinghui, local police said on Monday. Li, 36, who also died of injuries, was from Heilongjiang province. Li "took the drastic actions because he had trouble in his relationship", police said. He attacked drivers and passengers in different cars with a knife on a road near Guangqumen Bridge on Saturday afternoon.

Reinvestigation of scandal pending

Supervisors of the Red Cross Society of China still have not reached an agreement on whether to reinvestigate a scandal involving the charity from two years ago. Wang Yong, a member of the RCSC social supervision committee, said on Monday committee members will formulate a detailed plan for the reinvestigation next month and vote on the final decision.

Firms under fire over reception fee

Reports from the companies listed on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges showed that the reception costs of nine companies exceeded 100 million yuan ($16.1 million). The top 10 companies in terms of reception costs, including mostly State-owned enterprises, spent a total of 2.9 billion yuan on receptions last year. China Railway Construction Corp topped the list after spending 837 million yuan, or about 10 percent of its profit last year. The figures came under fire online, as a frugality campaign has been ongoing across the country since December.

Substandard food excluded

A total of 2,499 batches of substandard imported food were stopped from entering China last year, according to the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine. In March, entry-exit inspection and quarantine authorities also stopped 156 batches of unsafe food from 28 countries and regions from entering the domestic market, People's Daily reported on Monday. Substandard overseas food stopped from entering China covered a wide range, including frozen squid from Spain with excessive levels of cadmium and tea from Germany with excessive levels of rare earth elements.

Sichuan

All school classes up and running

School classes fully resumed on Monday in the quake zone 16 days after a magnitude-7 earthquake jolted Sichuan province, according to local education authorities. In the city of Ya'an, the epicenter, 329 elementary and secondary schools had been forced to suspend classes due to damaged buildings. Wei Chenglin was pleased classes have resume. "My biggest concern after the quake was getting back to my studying. I'm entering the final year of high school," said Wei, an 11th grade student at Lushan High School.

Anhui

Funding help for Mt Huangshan

Global Environment Facility, an international financing institution for environmental protection, has donated $2.72 million to help conserve biodiversity on Mount Huangshan in Anhui province. The Huangshan city government will provide an auxiliary fund of $10.98 million for the protection program covering the mountain, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as several other national- and provincial-level nature reserves in Anhui.

Ancient elephant tusk discovered

A fossilized elephant tusk that can be dated back at least 10,000 years has been discovered in Anhui province, local cultural heritage authorities said on Monday. A villager spotted the fossilized tusk, more than three meters in length, on Thursday while working on his farmland in the township of Gucheng, Huaiyuan county in Bengbu city, said Chen Liding, director of the county's institute of cultural heritage management.

House fire kills 8, leaves 3 injured

Eight people were killed and three injured after a fire engulfed a three-story residential building on Monday, firefighters said. At about 4:18 am, the local fire brigade received a report of a fire at a house in Humen township of Dongguan city. Firefighters arrived at the scene at about 4:23 am, and the fire was put out about 45 minutes later.

Shanghai

Transport terminal for Disney Resort

A large transport terminal will be built alongside the Shanghai Disney Resort, according to the Shanghai Morning Post, quoting the operator of the country's second Disneyland. The terminal, at the western entrance of the 3.9-square-kilometer park, will include five traffic booths, parking lots for taxis, and a terminus for buses running inside the park. It will cover 77,492 square meters, with construction expected to take 330 days at a cost of 217 million yuan ($35 million). The park is scheduled to open in 2015-16.
