Henan

School suspended after pupil beaten

Education authorities in Yuanyang county, Henan province, have ordered a primary school to suspend operations after an 8-year-old pupil was beaten by one of the teachers. The teacher suspected the boy of stealing the principal's watch, according to a local media report, and the boy denied doing it. Since June 8, he was questioned and beaten four times by the teacher, Zhang Song, who was also the principal's son. The boy was receiving treatment at a hospital in Xinxiang.

Check ordered on preserved eggs

The China Food and Drug Administration ordered related government agencies across the country on Sunday to supervise and inspect enterprises that make preserved eggs and related products. The move follows news that some businesses in Jiangxi province used industrial copper sulfate to speed up the production process of the eggs, seriously jeopardizing food safety. Food safety watchdogs in Jiangxi have been asked to investigate and punish the businesses in question.

Students found to have salmonella

The 386 students in Meishan, Sichuan province, who were hospitalized on Thursday with food poisoning symptoms, have been confirmed to have consumed food contaminated with salmonella, the Meishan city government information office said on Sunday. As of 3 pm on Sunday, 278 of the students from Meishan Yingtian School remained hospitalized. None were seriously ill and there were no deaths.

Suspect in gold robbery arrested

A suspect in the robbery of a gold store in Changsha, Hunan province, was arrested on Sunday. Police took Cao Wei, 34, of Chenzhou, Hunan, into custody in his hometown and confiscated 25 gold necklaces. Cao is suspected of robbing a gold shop at a jewelry mall in the Furong district of Changsha and making off with the gold necklaces, worth about 400,000 yuan ($65,200).
