Ningxia

5 die, 23 hurt in road accident

Five people were killed and 23 others injured in a road accident in the Ningxia Hui autonomous region, local authorities said on Wednesday. The accident happened at 6:25 pm on Tuesday when a bus carrying 26 people collided with a truck on National Highway 109 in Daba township, Qingtongxia city, police said.

Heilongjiang

Siberian tiger devours oxen

A wild Siberian tiger has eaten several oxen in the past week at two forest farms in Heilongjiang province, local authorities said on Wednesday. Two people called forestry police on Wednesday and Friday last week to report that their oxen had been eaten in the Wandashan mountain area. Animal footprints were discovered and an investigation found the footprints at the two sites matched, said Wang Yulun, a police officer. The culprit was confirmed to be a Siberian tiger at least three years old. It is the first time in 19 years that such a tiger has been discovered in the area.

Beijing

Draft rule on animal epidemics

Residents in Beijing have been asked to send in their suggestions on a draft regulation to deal with animal epidemics by July 9. According to the proposed regulation, the slaughtering of animals can only be conducted in licensed factories with access to centralized quarantine in order to guarantee the food safety of pork, beef, chicken and mutton. Violators will be fined up to 200,000 yuan ($32,540). The draft rule also suggests the establishment of disposal sites for dead pets.

Micro blog targets drug abuse

Beijing No 2 People's Procuratorate started a micro blog targeting drug abuse on Wednesday, the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking. Prosecutors will use the platform to highlight drug cases and announce court verdicts, according to a statement. "We want to use the micro blog to help the public understand more about the dangers related to drugs," said Zhang Ting, a prosecutor.

Sichuan

Official probed for corruption

Wu Tao, deputy head of the Jinjiang district government in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan province, is under investigation for corruption, Beijing News reported on Wednesday. Wu, who is also the district's police chief, was close to former Sichuan deputy Party chief Li Chuncheng, who is under investigation himself. Wu reportedly had four passports and was attempting to escape abroad with a large sum of money when he was arrested in May.

Guangxi

Foreign husband sued for divorce

A woman in Liuzhou, Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region, has sued her foreign husband for divorce, Nanguo Today reported on Wednesday. The woman, surnamed Li, got to know a Canadian in May 2008 when they were on a tour in Guilin, Guangxi. They were married in February 2009, in Liuzhou. However, the man went back to Canada the same month and has not returned. Li asked the man to come back four times, but he refused. Li sued for divorce on March 15; the man agreed, but did not want to come to China for legal proceedings. The court ruled in favor of Li's demands last Friday.

Shanghai

H7N9 strain kills city resident

A man died from the H7N9 strain of bird flu in Shanghai on Wednesday, health authorities said. The Shanghai native, who was 56, died early in the morning after becoming infected with the virus on April 11, the Shanghai Municipal Health and Family Planning Commission said. The city has reported 33 human infections, with 16 deaths. Two people are still being treated.

Zhejiang

Man detained for refusing to help

A man has been detained for intentional homicide after he refused to save two children struggling in water last month although he is a good swimmer, Qianjiang Evening News reported on Wednesday. The 23-year-old, identified as Zhang, was picking bayberries at a mountain in Taizhou, Zhejiang province, on May 18 together with a 10-year-old girl and a 12-year-old boy. After the girl fell into a pool, the boy jumped in to rescue her. But Zhang ran away despite the children's pleas for help, leaving both to drown.

Henan

Student stabbed in fight over fan

A college student was stabbed by his roommate on Saturday morning as they fought over an electric fan, rmlt.com.cn, a website under the People's Daily, reported on Wednesday. According to the students at Zhengzhou Huanghe Science and Technology College, the two were fighting over a fan at about 1:50 am, and one of the students injured the other with a knife. The injured student was sent to a hospital, and is in stable condition.

Shaanxi

Tax official sacked for gambling

A former taxation bureau official in Lueyang county, Shaanxi province, was dismissed from his post due to his involvement in a gambling case. According to a statement by the State Administration of Taxation, Huang Lianjun, the former head of the county's tax bureau, was found by police to be participating in a gambling session at a tea house on May 28 while he was on sick leave. Huang was then detained for 10 days.
