Major China-US military exchanges since 2012
Aug 16-19, 2013
Chinese Minister of Defense Chang Wanquan visits the United States at the invitation of his US counterpart Chuck Hagel. His visit takes him to the US Pacific Command in Hawaii and US Northern Command in Colorado before meeting Hagel in the Pentagon on August 19.
July 10-11, 2013
The 5th round of China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogue is held in Washington with the participation on senior military officials on both sides, including in the first meeting of the bilateral working group on cyber security. An outcome document says US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel will pay a visit to China in 2014 and the two sides decide to actively explore a notification mechanism for major military activities and to continue discussions on the rules of behavior on military air and maritime activities.

Under the strategic framework of the fifth round of the China-US Strategic and Economic Dialogues (S&ED), the 3rd China-US Strategic Security Dialogue is held in Washington, DC. It was co-hosted by Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Zhang Yesui and US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns. Wang Guanzhong, deputy chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, James Miller, US Under Secretary of Defense for Policy, and Samuel Locklear III, Commander of the United States Pacific Command (USPACOM) also attend the talk.

China and the United States both participate in the ASEAN Defense Ministers' Meeting Plus (ADMM-Plus) Humanitarian Assistance and Disaster Relief and Military Medicine Exercise (HADR & MM Ex) in Brunei. More than 2,000 military personnel from the 10 ASEAN countries and eight other countries including Australia, China, India, Japan, New Zealand, Russia, Republic of Korea and the US take part.

Chinese President Xi Jinping, also chairman of the Central Military Commission, meets with US President Barack Obama in Sunnylands, California. Both agree to explore a new type of major country relationship, better manage their countries' differences and strengthen military cooperation and exchanges.

Qi Jianguo, deputy chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army, meets with Rose Gottemoeller, acting Under Secretary of State for arms control and international security in Beijing at the 6th round of China-US strategic security and multilateral arms control negotiations.

USS Shilon, a Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser, pays a port call at the Chinese People's Liberation Army Navy's South Sea Fleet headquarters in Zhanjiang, Guangdong province. The port visit to China is part of a series of military-to-military exchanges scheduled to take place this year between the two countries.

Martin Dempsey, chairman of the US Joint Chiefs of Staff, pays a five-day visit to China, making it the first high-level bilateral military contact since President Xi Jinping assumed office in March and US President Barack Obama began his second term in January. During the visit, Dempsey also meets with Defense Minister Chang Wanquan and chief of the General Staff of the Chinese People's Liberation Army Fang Fenghui and visits an aviation regiment and National Defense University.
