Man charged with killing 2-year-old

A man accused of throwing a 2-year-old girl to the ground and fatally injuring her has been charged with intentional homicide, Beijing prosecutors said on Wednesday. Han Lei threw the girl to the ground after he had a dispute with her mother while attempting to park his car near a bus stop in the Daxing district on July 23, according to the No 1 People's Procuratorate in the capital.

Briton arrested amid investigation

A British risk consultant held in China since mid-July amid an investigation into the country's pharmaceutical industry has been arrested, the British embassy in Beijing and his family said on Wednesday. Peter Humphrey and his wife, Yu Yingzeng, were detained in Shanghai on July 10 as police probed bribery allegations against British drugmaker GlaxoSmithKline.

Anti-graft agency to curb gift-giving

China's top anti-graft agency called for efforts to curb gift-giving, banquets at public expense and extravagance among Party officials during the coming Mid-Autumn Festival, which falls on Sept 19 this year. In a statement released after a work conference, the Standing Committee of the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection of the Communist Party of China called on disciplinary watchdogs at all levels to step up supervision during the festivals and increase checks of the work style of officials.

Bus passenger accused in crash

A Nanjing resident has been charged with endangering public security after turning the steering wheel of a bus because he needed to use the restroom. The man, surnamed Liu, drank five bottles of beer before going home on a bus on June 5. He suddenly turned the steering wheel of the bus, which was traveling 70 km an hour on the highway, after the driver refused to stop. The bus, with 30 passengers on board, ran into a cement guardrail.

One dead, one hurt in wild boar attack

A 40-year-old man in Xuan'en county was bitten to death by a boar. Zhang Bo and his father, Zhang Longshan, 60, came across a boar while walking near their house in Wanzhai township on Sunday morning. The animal charged at them, fatally wounding Zhang Bo. His father suffered injuries to his left arm and leg.

66 fall ill after dining at banquets

Sixty-six people became ill after attending banquets at a newly launched hotel in An-qing, Xin'an Evening News reported on Wednesday. As of Tuesday, 25 people were in stable condition after being hospitalized. All had dined at three feasts held on Sunday at the Hongxique Hotel in Taihu township, which opened on Aug 5. The hotel is being investigated.

Court rejectsex-official's appeal

Luoyang Intermediate People's Court has rejected the appeal of a former education official in Henan province who was sentenced to 15 years in prison for bribery, Legal Weekly reported on Wednesday. Feng Zhe, the former deputy director of finance of the Henan Education Department, was convicted of accepting bribes that amounted to 10 million yuan ($1.63 million), including cash and nine residential apartments, and was sentenced to 15 years' imprisonment by the Mengjin county court last year.

Suspected food poisoning claims 4

Four family members died after having lunch at a village in Changning county on Tuesday afternoon. Two adults and two children died, while two other family members are in a hospital. Suspecting that the victims died of food poisoning, police were examining the family's food and cooking ingredients.

Farmer dies after being hit with hoe

A farmer in Gao'po township, Cangxi county, died after being hit by his younger brother with a hoe, the West China Metropolis Daily reported on Wednesday. Fu, 56, had an altercation over trivial matters with his younger brother on Thursday and the younger brother struck Fu in his head and legs with a hoe.
