2011

Sept 21 and 22: Some villagers in Wukan vent their anger against village authorities over issues related to land use, financing and the election of local officials.

Nov 21 and 22: Large-scale protests take place in village.

Dec 9: Xue Jinbo and two other villagers are arrested on suspicion of damaging public property and disrupting public services.

Dec 11: Wukan villagers gather again after Xue, who was suspected of organizing the November demonstration, dies in police custody.

Dec 13: Guangdong Provincial People's Procuratorate informs Xue's family of his death. Investigation by a third party finds his death accords with general pathological features of a sudden death.

Dec 22: Zhu Mingguo, deputy Party chief of Guangdong, heads a work team to Wukan. He emphasizes fairness and openness in handling of the situation.

Dec 23: Three people from Wukan, who had been detained by police for alleged vandalism during the protests, are released on bail pending trial.

Dec 30: Work team concedes that the major demands of Wukan villagers are reasonable and that local officials made "some mistakes".

2012

Jan 15: Wukan sets up new Party branch and work team to prepare for forthcoming election of village committee.

Feb 1: Campaign kicks off for the election of new leadership after former village heads were removed.

Feb 11: Villagers vote for deputies in a second round of elections for new leadership.

March 3: Villagers go to polls to elect a new village committee, which includes a chief, two deputy chiefs and four members. Lin Zulian is elected as committee chief with 6,205 votes; Yang Semao, with 3,609 votes, is elected as deputy chief.

March 4: A seven-member village committee is elected.

2014

March 13: Deputy chief Yang Semao is detained for alleged bribery.

March 14: Yang is released from jail on bail; He prepares for the upcoming election of Wukan's new leadership.

March 18: Deputy chief Hong Ruichao is detained for alleged bribery.

March 31: Election of new leadership kicks off; Lin Zulian is re-elected head of a new village committee.

April 1: Two deputy chiefs and four committee members are elected after two votes, as no candidate had enough votes to win in first round.
