The West is playing with fire in Syria by offering weapons to the rebels, says an article in People's Daily (excerpts below).
The Syria crisis has been going on for more than two years and claimed about 70,000 lives. The Syrian people want peace and stability. But some Western countries plan on lifting the arms embargo and this makes the situation more deadly.
The main supporters of lifting arms embargo are the United Kingdom and France. The weapons given to the rebels may be used by extremists, which will further escalate tension.
The international community has reached a consensus to solve the Syrian crisis through political means. The major powers have an obligation to urge both sides to agree a cease-fire.
A major international conference may soon be held on the crisis. The EU should take this opportunity to play a constructive role.
