Lawmakers are revising the food safety law for the first time in four years. Much has happened in that period, said an article in the 21st Century Business Herald (excerpts below).
The law empowers county and city governments and authorities to supervise food enterprises and deal with issues concerning food safety. But the urge to cover up rather than investigate has proved too strong on too many occasions
Any new law should ensure that watchdogs at the provincial and national level have more power to supervise local enterprises.
Punishment must also be enhanced and standards updated and made uniform.
The government should also allow civil organizations to act as an independent third-party supervisor. The presence of civil organizations can motivate local governments to take their responsibilities more seriously.
