A few famous dominating middle schools is not good for education, said an article in China Youth Daily (excerpts below).
Two famous middle schools had 169 students accepted by two top universities, Peking and Tsinghua. For the schools this is an excellent result. For the system of education, the result is less clear cut.
Our middle school education system is more and more like competitive sport, which only cares about scores.
There are justifiable concerns among the public that a few schools are doing very well while the vast majority are not doing so well.
Ordinary schools can hardly attract good teachers because they can't compete with famous schools.
Local education authorities must learn that schools and students deserve equal attention.
