The US political system is the root cause of Detroit's bankruptcy, said an article in People's Daily (excerpts below).
In money-oriented election politics, voter loyalty is bought, especially through promises, that can't be met, on welfare.
Detroit is a shining example of this and what can go wrong when the money runs out.
The city's fate is not helped by the Obama administration's apparent indifference and Michigan state’s Republican government's reluctance to help a Democrat city.
Obama bailed out the three big automobile enterprises in Detroit but is strangely quiet on the city's plight.
The US political system is largely dominated by partisan politics. When a local problem is not central to the politicians' agenda, the state and federal governments will not set aside too much energy to solve it.
