WASHINGTON - Five-time Grand Slam champion Maria Sharapova withdrew from the US Open on Sunday due to a leg injury.
"Unfortunately I will not be able to compete in this years US Open. I have done everything possible to be ready but it was just not enough time. To all my amazing fans, I will be back in the Asian swing in a few weeks and look forward to finishing the year healthy and strong," Sharapova made the annoucement through her social media page.
It's the second time in three years that Sharapova has had to withdraw from the Open due to injury, but only the fourth since making her major debut in 2003.
Sharapova, the No. 2 seed, will be replaced in the draw by Daria Kasatkina of Russia, the USTA announced.
