5 Urbock 1516, honoring the German beer purity law: This summer, to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the Bavarian Beer Purity Law of 1516, the brew master Andreas Starkmann at the German restaurant and brewery Ellingen Brauhaus west of Beijing offers a special brew called Urbock 1516 using bottom fermentation, and a special recipe that gives the beer a citrusy aroma and a strong touch of malt. This light brown, smooth and light bodied drink costing 58 yuan for 500ml. The Reinheitsgebot (German beer purity law) was a series of regulations limiting the ingredients in beer production in Germany, with the best-known version of the law adopted in Bavaria in 1516. The law decreed the only ingredients that could be used in beer were water, barley and hops, (yeast was added later), because at that time many other ingredients were used as a substitute for hops, or for the intoxicating effect, or to extend shelf life.
